Frequently Asked Questions
HOW ARE YOUR SOY CANDLES MADE?
All Blue Deer Candles are hand-poured in West Point, MS, by Ben Earnest and his wife Leslie. Our family prides itself on the quality and details of each soy candle we produce. Here are Blue Deer Candles and Wax, all of our products have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We will replace your candle if you are not completely satisfied.
WHAT ARE YOUR SCENTED CANDLES MADE OF?
All of our candles are made from 100% soy wax. Our soy candles contain no parafin, filler, or carrier oils. Our dyes contain no harmful addititives. Our wicks are braided cotton with a paper core (Not zinc or lead found in many mass produced candles). Whats unique about soy wax compared to petroleum based waxes is that it is non-toxic, renewable, and biodegradeable. Even our fragrance oils are phthalate free.
WHAT ARE PHTHALATES?
From our frangrance supplier: "Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are esters of Phthalic acid. They are used to dissolve raw materials when making fragrance oils. They have been used for many decades in a myriad of pharmaceuticals, household and industrial products. Recently, there have been concerns that high levels of Phthalates can cause a host of health issues. It is not clear whether the levels that people encounter cause adverse effects, but it is clear to us that products would be better if they didn’t pose any such risks."
A 100% soy candle will burn longer, cleaner, and more evenly that a traditional parafin or petroleum based candle.
HOW LONG SHOULD I BURN MY CANDLE?
Soy wax has a memory just like you and I. It should be allowed to achieve a full melt pool on it's very first burn. If it is extinguished prior to allowing a full melt pool, all following melt pools will not go past the first one. To create a full melt pool, burn the candle for a minimum of one hour for every inch of its diameter. All future burns should follow the first one's path and melt fully to the sides. Depending on the diameter of the container, those future burns should be no longer than four hours. Follow the rule for creating a melt pool to calculate the length of time a candle can burn safely.
Make sure to trim the wick down to 1/4 inch before each burn. This will assure that no soot from the wick will smoke and leave any residue.
MY CANDLE IS SWEATY/FROTHY ON TOP. WHAT IS THAT?
Frosting is a natural characteristic of soy. It is not a flaw. It is unique to pure soy candles. Often times it is called the "bloom." It is a way that you can tell if your candle is really made with pure, all-natural soy wax. It's part of the soy experience!
Since soybean wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, it can release excess oils (fragrance) which it cannot hold (usually due to extreme temperature changes). You can simply wipe the sweat from the top of the candle prior to your first burn.
